B의 눈, The Eyes of the B

양립된 세계에서 어느 곳에도 속하지 못하고 가운데에 서 있는 형태를 작가는 ‘경계’라고 한다. 작가는 2017년부터 ‘경계선 세계, Boundary World’ 작업을 진행해왔는데, 이에 연장된 작업으로써 ‘경계인의 눈’, 즉 ‘B의 눈’ 작업을 진행해 왔다.

화면에서 또 다른 화면으로 이동하는 과정은 마치 제가 다른 세계로 시선을 돌리는 것과 동일하다. 그렇게 작가는 ‘경계’를 보다 넓은 범주로 이해해보는 과정에서, 나 자신과 타인의 관계를 포함해 수많은 개인과 계층 사이에 그어지는 현대 사회 내의 각종 경계선들을 바라보게 되었다. 이처럼 작가는, 저를 포함해 현대사회를 살아가고 있는 모든 이들이 경계선 앞에 내던져있다는 사유를 하며 이것을 포착해내는 시도를 하고 있다.

나의 회화는 다채로운 색상을 지닌다. 마치 우리 모두가 경계인인 것처럼, 나는 배열되고 교차된 각각의 이미지 모두 정체성이 있다고 상상하며, 각각의 색상 전부가 존재감이 부각되길 바란다. 어떤 시각에 보는지에 따라 모두가 주인공의 모습을 지닐 수 있도록, 그 누구도 소외되지 않기를 바란다. 그래서 나의 회화에서 ‘경계’란, 부유하고 흩어진 개개인의 고유한 정체성이 보호되고 포용될 수 있는 희미한 유선이 되길 바란다. (2021년 작가노트 중)

The artist refers to the form of standing in the middle of a world that does not belong to any place as a ‘border.’ The artist has been working on ‘Boundary World’ since 2017, and as an extension of this work, he has been working on ‘Boundary Man’s Eyes’, or ‘B’s Eyes’.

The process of moving from one screen to another is the same as turning my gaze to another world. In the process of understanding ‘boundaries’ as a broader category, the author came to look at the various boundaries within modern society drawn between numerous individuals and classes, including the relationships between myself and others. In this way, the author is attempting to capture this by thinking that everyone living in modern society, including me, is thrown in front of a borderline.

My paintings have a variety of colors. Just as we are all borderline people, I imagine that each image that is arranged and intersected has an identity, and I hope that each color will stand out. I hope that everyone can be the main character depending on their perspective, and that no one is left out. So, I hope that the ‘boundary’ in my paintings becomes a faint streamline where the unique identities of wealthy and scattered individuals can be protected and embraced. (From the 2021 artist’s notes)
