홍 채연 작가는 1991년, 한국, 서울에서 태어났다. 예원학교, 서울예술고등학교에서 공부를 마친 뒤 이화여자대학교 서양화전공을 졸업하고 동대학원 서양화전공을 졸업했다. 작가의 작업은 ‘경계(境界)’의 의미를 중의적으로 해석하며 시작했다. 작가는 ‘경계’를 어떠한 영역을 두 영역으로 나누고 구분해주는 선(線)의 의미와 두 영역이 서로 혼재되는 공간, 혹은 전혀 교차되지 않는 공간이라 상상했다. 작가는 이 ‘경계의 세계’를 현실과 가상세계 ‘사이’에 놓아진 초현실적인 공간으로 표현하면서, 군중 속의 외로움처럼 어느 곳에도 소속되지 못한 심리적 불안을 어루만져 주는 심미적 공간이라고 여겼다.

이러한 작가의 모습과 회화는, 작가가 세계와 관계를 맺는 정체성이 닮아 있다. 작가는 타인과 관계를 맺는 적극적인 모험과 경험들을 통해 작가 스스로가 세계와 세계 사이에 존재한 ‘경계인(境界人)’으로 느꼈다. 그리고 작가의 시선은 점차 각 개인들, 각 계층들 사이에서 그어지고 있는 여러 다양한 경계선들로 확장되어 나아갔다. 그렇게 작가는 ‘경계’를 보다 넓은 범주로 이해해보는 과정에서, 작가 자신과 타인의 관계를 포함해 수많은 개인과 계층 사이에 그어지는 현대 사회 내의 각종 경계선들을 바라보고 있다. 작가는 경계인의 시선에서 바라보는 사회에 관심을 가지게 되었고, 이로부터 오늘날 사회 전반에 나타나는 여러 이질적인 양상들을 탐구하는 배경이 되었다.

작가는 어떤 이미지를 마주할 때 대화를 건넨다고 생각한다. 이때 대화를 걸고 싶은 이미지는 주로 작가가 느끼기에 겉으로는 화려해보이지만 사실은 슬픔이 있는 존재들이 대부분이다. 작가는 이러한 이미지들에게 주로 대화를 걸면서 화면 속 이야기를 증식한다. 그리고 이미지들을 둘러싸고 있는 기존의 경계들을 해체하여 간격과 틈새를 만들고, 이를 회화적 제스처를 통해 새롭게 관계 맺는 방식들을 모색한다. 이 과정은 각각 출처가 다른 이미지들을 캔버스 위에 배열하고 교차시킴으로써, 기존의 내러티브로부터 분리시켜 화면 안에서 또 다른 의미와 맥락들을 만들어나가는 것이다.

이런 작가의 회화는 다채로운 색상을 지니고 있다. 마치 우리 모두가 경계인인 것처럼, 작가는 배열되고 교차된 각각의 이미지 모두 정체성이 있다고 상상하며, 각각의 색상 전부가 존재감이 부각되길 바란다. 어떤 시각에 보는지에 따라 모두가 주인공의 모습을 지닐 수 있도록, 그 누구도 소외되지 않기를 바란다. 작가의 회화에서 ‘경계’란, 부유하고 흩어진 개개인의 고유한 정체성이 보호되고 포용될 수 있는 희미한 유선이 되길 바란다.

Author Hong Chae-yeon was born in 1991 in Seoul, Korea. After completing her studies at Yewon School and Seoul Arts High School, she graduated from Ewha Womans University with a major in Western Painting and from the same graduate school. She began her work by interpreting the meaning of ‘boundary’ ambiguously. As an artist, she imagined ‘border’ as a line that divides and separates an area into two areas, and a space where the two areas mix with each other, or a space where they do not intersect at all. The artist expressed this 'world of boundaries' as a surreal space placed 'between' reality and the virtual world, and she considered it to be an aesthetic space that soothes the psychological anxiety of not belonging anywhere, like loneliness in a crowd. .

The artist's appearance and her paintings resemble the artist's identity in relation to the world. She felt that the writer herself was a ‘border person’ who existed between worlds through the active adventures and experiences she had in forming relationships with others. And her author's gaze gradually expanded to the various boundaries drawn between each individual and each class. In this way, in the process of understanding ‘boundary’ as a broader category, she looks at the various boundaries within modern society that are drawn between numerous individuals and classes, including the relationship between the writer herself and others. As a writer, she became interested in society as seen from the perspective of a marginal person, and this became the background for her to explore the various heterogeneous aspects that appear throughout today's society.

I believe that the artist communicates when he or she encounters an image. At this time, most of the images that the artist wants to talk about are beings that seem glamorous on the outside, but are actually sad. The artist proliferates the story on screen by mainly talking to these images. Then, the existing boundaries surrounding the images are dismantled to create gaps and gaps, and new ways of establishing relationships are sought through pictorial gestures. This process arranges and intersects images from different sources on the canvas, separating them from the existing narrative and creating different meanings and contexts within the canvas.

This artist's paintings have a variety of colors. Just as we are all borderline people, the artist imagines that each image that is arranged and intersected has an identity, and hopes that each color will stand out. I hope that everyone can be the main character depending on their perspective, and that no one is left out. I hope that the ‘boundary’ in the artist’s paintings becomes a faint streamline where the unique identities of wealthy and scattered individuals can be protected and embraced.
