홍 채연, Hong Chaeyeon

  

  b.1991 홍채연 작가는 서울에서 회화작업을 하고 있는 미술작가이다. 그녀는 이어지지는 않지만 이어지는 그림을 그린다. 그녀는 언제나 캔버스의 옆면까지 그림을 그리며 ‘증식’할 수 있는 여지가 남겨져 있다. 증식하는 회화들을 위해 그녀는 일상 속에서 영감을 주는 이미지들을 수집하고, 상상력을 반영하여 이미지 속에 등장하는 대상에게 대화를 건네곤 한다. 이 대화를 건네는 방식이 그녀의 회화를 끊임없이 증식하게 해주었다.

 

 

 항상 웃어야하는 ‘텔레토비’는, 짜증날 때도 있고 울고 싶을 때도 있는데 항상 웃고만 있어야 한다. 겨울인데 항상 멋있어야 하는 ‘행복한 왕자’는, 추워 죽겠는데 발가벗긴 채 사계절 내내 가만히만 있어야 한다. 조개에서 태어난 ‘비너스’는, 부모도 없이 혼자 태어났는데 태어나자마자 하필 신이라서 친구가 없다. 내가 만약에 ‘흐르는 물’이라면, 선택의 여지없이 ‘표면’이라는 상대방에 맞추고만 살아야한다. (작가노트 중)

 

 그녀의 작업에서 자주 등장하는 키워드는 ‘경계’입니다. 그녀는 그녀 스스로를 비롯해 현대인 모두가 ‘경계인(境界人)’이라고 생각하며 세상을 바라보고 작업을 진행하고 있다. 현대인 모두가 느끼는 어떤 곳에도 속하지 못한 심리에서 태어난 불안과 고독은 그녀 작품에서만큼은 동화책 같은 밝은 세계를 누비며 점차 완화되기를 바란다. 

 

 겉으로는 화려해보이지만 사실은 슬픔이 있는 존재들은 우리들의 모습과 닮아 있다. 군중 속의 외로움처럼, 우리는 타인과 함께 있어도 외롭고 집단에 있어도 배척된다. 이런 경험과 관찰들을 통해서 나는 마치 아슬아슬한 경계에 놓아진 것처럼 경계에 있는 사람과도 같다는 생각을 하였다. 나의 회화는 다채로운 색상을 지니고 있다. 진하고 두꺼운 메이크업처럼, 콤플렉스를 숨겨주는 색상들을 은유한다. 이러한 다채로운 색상은 마치 우리 모두가 경계인인 것처럼, 배열되고 교차된 각각의 이미지 모두 정체성이 있다고 상상하며, 각각의 색상 전부가 존재감이 부각되길 바란다.  그래서 그녀의 작업은 동화 속 환상의 세계에 온 것만 같은 현실적인 요소와 비현실적인 공간이 모두 존재하고 있다. 이 대비되는 세계를 ‘경계의 영역’이라 하는데, 그녀는 이 경계의 영역과 이를 구분짓는 경계선들을 상상력을 통해 해체하는 동시에 서사를 만들어 다시 결합하고 끊임없이 뻗어나가는 증식회화를 만든다.

Chaeyeon Hong (b. 1991) is a visual artist based in Seoul who works primarily in painting. She creates paintings that are not continuous but feel connected. Always painting up to the edges of her canvases, she leaves room for her works to “proliferate.” To create her proliferating paintings, she collects images from everyday life that inspire her, infuses them with imagination, and often engages in conversations with the subjects within the images. This dialogical approach has allowed her paintings to continuously grow and expand.

The perpetually smiling “Teletubbies” may feel frustrated or want to cry but are forced to smile all the time. The “Happy Prince,” who must always appear elegant even in winter, stands completely exposed to the cold, enduring all four seasons. Venus, born from a shell, is without parents and has no friends, as she was born into the lonely position of a deity. If I were “Flowing Water,” I would have no choice but to conform to the “Surface” that dictates my path. (From the artist's notes)

A recurring keyword in her work is “boundaries.” The artist perceives herself and all modern individuals as “boundary dwellers,” navigating the psychological space of not truly belonging anywhere. The anxiety and loneliness born from this inability to belong—an experience common to contemporary life—are things she hopes to alleviate within her works. She envisions her paintings as vibrant, storybook-like worlds that bring brightness and solace.

Beings that appear glamorous on the outside but hide sadness within reflect the human condition. Much like loneliness in a crowd, we often feel isolated even when among others or excluded even within groups. These observations and personal experiences have led her to feel like a precarious figure living on the edge, much like the “boundary dwellers” she portrays. Her paintings are characterized by vivid colors, which metaphorically serve to conceal insecurities, much like thick, dramatic makeup. Each color and image within her work represents an individual identity, arranged and intersected to emphasize their presence, as though all are part of the collective experience of living on the boundary.(From the artist's notes)

Her work combines realistic elements with surreal spaces, evoking a fantastical world akin to a fairy tale. She calls this juxtaposed world “the realm of boundaries.” Through imagination, she deconstructs the dividing lines that define this boundary and constructs new narratives, creating proliferating paintings that grow endlessly, bridging reality and fantasy.
