작가는 2017년부터 ‘증식하는 회화’를 가져와 화면을 확장하고 증식해 나가는 작업을 진행해왔다. <Calendar of Cloud>는 작가가 하늘의 구름을 바라보고 이미지를 수집하며 구름의 동세를 관찰한 것으로부터 시작한다. 

 

작가는 몽글몽글하고 금방이라도 부서질 것 같은 ‘구름의 외형’과 매 순간 변해버리는 ‘구름의 동세’를 화면에 가져오고 상상력을 바탕으로 공간을 구성한다. 멈춰 있는 공간과 바쁘게 움직이고 있는 구름을 보면서 공간의 분위기를 상상한다. 작가는 캘린더라는 단어를 사용했는데, 계획적인 스케줄을 의미 하는 것과는 달리 여기서는 우발적이고 즉흥적인 구름의 동세의 달력이다. 우발성과 계획성이 상반되는 개념이지만, 이 즉흥적인 계획은 사실상 우리가 일상에서 매일 세우는 계획이자 이를 무너뜨리고 방해받는 예기치 못한 사건들이기도 하다. 작가는 이것들이 섞이고 얽힌 일상들을 회화의 캘린더에 담았다. 

 

공간은 멈춰 있지만 언제 어디서 부서지고, 어디서 분리되고, 어디서 다시 모이지는 정확히 알 수 없다. 나는 균열과 간격들을 어렴풋이 지각한다. 이때 내가 우연히 쳐다본 하늘. 가만히 멈춰 있지만 막연하게 느껴지는 땅에 비해 하늘의 구름들은 너무나 긴박하고 연속적이다. 커다란 구름의 일부가 떨어져 나가 작은 구름들로 탈바꿈되기도 하고 다시 재결합하여 또 다른 새로운 형상들을 만들어 낸다. (2023년 작가노트 중)

 

Since 2017, the artist has been working on expanding and proliferating the canvas using ‘proliferating painting.’ <Calendar of Cloud> begins with the author looking at clouds in the sky, collecting images, and observing the movement of clouds.

 

The artist brings to the screen the ‘outward appearance of the clouds’, which is fluffy and ready to break at any moment, and the ‘movement of the clouds’ that changes at every moment, and constructs the space based on imagination. Imagine the atmosphere of the space while looking at the still space and the busy moving clouds. The author used the word calendar, and unlike the meaning of a planned schedule, here it is a calendar of accidental and impromptu movement of clouds. Although contingency and planning are conflicting concepts, these impromptu plans are actually the plans we make every day in our daily lives, as well as unexpected events that break them and disrupt them. The artist captured these mixed and intertwined daily lives in a painting calendar.

 

Space is frozen, but we cannot know exactly when and where it breaks, where it separates, and where it comes back together. I vaguely perceive cracks and gaps. At this time, I happened to look at the sky. Compared to the ground that stands still but feels vague, the clouds in the sky are so urgent and continuous.
